The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s annual lavish Philadelphia Flower Show for 2016, running from March 5 to 13 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, was entitled “Explore America: 100 Years of the National Park Service” and evocative exhibits, reflecting that theme, celebrated Nature and the individual parks. A red, white, and blue topiary Liberty Bell, backed by the words of the Preamble to the United States Constitution, represented Philadelphia’s own Independence National Historic Park. Park Service Rangers were available to answer questions and such animal sculptures as Emily White’s American Bison and Boomtown Bear, as well as topiary wolf, fox, moose, turtle, eagles, and owls, added to the atmosphere. Tributes to California’s redwoods and Hawaii’s orchids were among the highlights. Spring was definitely already in the air on the day that we attended, March 9, as the abundance of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths on display attested.
