Queer singer songwriter Be Steadwell’s latest release, ‘Queer Love Songs,’ is the antidote to the circuit party thump that will be all around you in New York City during the last weekend in June, as Pride is in full effect! Whether you’re on your way to the Rally or the March, this album is the companion you need to get you into that vibing Summer mood.
Following up on 2017’s “Breakup Songs,” this album is full of sensual back-in-the-game queerness that is lush and hot as a febrile jungle. Through all of this, she is not overly serious. Contrasting the opener, “Greens,” which makes gardening and healthy eating supremely sexy, with the adjacent “Netflix,” with the explicit truism “is fucking up my sex life.” Too true in our go-go-go world!
There are great collaborations on this album as well, with Asha Santee providing grace notes for “Netflix” and Toshi Reagon augmenting “The Door.” And when you hear “Sometimes,” this will be particularly resonant with those who love gender non-binary people, and it is the first single released from this album.
“Know You” is the perfect rumination, articulating the affect and sense of possibility, when we bathe in the nightlife and start to connect with our sensual self again, just when we thought a bad breakup had forever chased away those welcome feelings of corporeal connection. Breathe it in! And if you want to get your righteous ire in fine fettle for the Sunday Pride March, “Gay Sex” might just be for you–it’s Be Steadwell’s response to homophobic personalities and media.
