Saturday, January 12, 2019 was a special day–the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center in Poughkeepsie hosted an eye-opening event that makes it difficult to see even the most everyday items the same way as before, when photographer Holly Pierce held her first solo show, “An Uncommon Angle–A Gathering of Photographic Images.” The Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center Gallery is housed in what was formerly the Vassar Home for Aged Men, a beautiful structure built in the 1880s by the family of Matthew Vassar, founder of Vassar College. The galleries downstairs were lined with framed photographs from Pierce’s world travels–unusual views of familiar subjects and moments of rare beauty were captured and frozen in time. From Paris and Cologne to the United States and Portugal, the photos included reflections, refractions, landmarks, and the collision of art with us all. Friends of the artists thronged around the photos and people came from around the Northeast, as well as around the corner, as the Poughkeepsie folk who support all of the arts came to have a look-see. Before the end of the afternoon, there were several works marked “Sold.”
Pierce’s uncanny knack for capturing the Seattle Space Needle with a fringe of Chihuly, the moment when a bird is nearly gone, the Eye of the World made of fractals of rainbow crystals in the Winter air, which vanishes almost as soon as we’ve noted its presence, all are frozen in time. “An Uncommon Angle” is on view through February 15, so consider giving your Valentine an experience and a lasting memory in the form of art on paper. A portion of the artist’s proceeds go back to the Arts Center, so be sure to check www.Cunneen-Hackett.org for more information.
