“A Christmas Carol” is rampant at this time of year with dozens of iterations and this production is adapted and directed by Lauren Keating. If you saw the show last year, there are some changes you may see and that’s part of what keeps the production fresh every single year.
There are snacks for the wee ones, festive specialty beverages for the adults and hot cocoa for all to prepare the mood heading in. Families, couples and youthful groups filed in to an auditorium already filled with wonder. There were carolers in period costumes and Holiday finery all around and when the lights dimmed, we all settled in for a cherished telling of a truly great holiday story.
Joel McKinnon Miller’s Scrooge is masterful. We see the subtle changes in a character deprived of love whose soul has shriveled like a flower with no water. And as Scrooge’s memories of love and joy rejuvenate, it’s like watching a time-lapse film of a rose blooming. The cast is full of minstrels who sing and play, literally and figuratively, and when you see how Mrs. Dilber (Polly Lee) serves tea that you’re in for a Holiday Feast in one of the best Carols you’ll find. Many families have made this a tradition and you should too. So many families see themselves reflected in a four dimensional way, when you add time. Experience the joy of the season with this timeless classic.
“A Christmas Carol” continues only through December 29 so get thee to the box office! Bundle up the children of all ages and go NOW! Visit the box office at www.McCarter.org.
