Samuel D. Hunter’s “A Case for the Existence of God” is running now through March 16 only, so get your tickets now. For those who believe that there are tensions other than sexual that run through people’s lives, this is the play for you. If you believe everything is sexual tension, this play is for you – yet in a different way.
We meet Ryan (Matt Monaco) and Keith (Chauncy Thomas) at a very intimate moment – they are in Keith’s office going over Ryan’s finances. Ryan wants to buy property and chose Keith as his mortgage broker for the simplest of reasons – they both have a daughter in a local pre-school. Both men are devoted to their daughters. Ryan’s is his with his soon-to-be-ex wife. Keith has always wanted children and as a single queer man in the small Idaho town where both grew up, fostering is the option he’s chosen. They meet and we discover that life is truly about moments. A seemingly small decision may beget lifelong ties.
One of the gifts we get from Hunter’s work is that there is a higher mind at work in most of us. We see this in the complexity of the interactions between Ryan and Keith, even when they are each at low points. Neither one devolves into his lowest self, even though each has very low moments. Rather, they choose that most human of their vulnerability and that is what will get us all through these very trying times.
Artfully directed by Luna’s Artistic Director Ari Laura Kreith, Monaco and Thomas will have you thinking about their performances long after you leave the theater. Your heart and your mind are both engaged and what a ride!
