No Foolin', "The Physics of Love" is a Hit

My halcyon days as a high school junior included a love affair with Physics. Yes, the class. It's where we learned there could be no sex in a frictionless environment (!) and understanding centripetal force would make you a better driver. We use Physics every day with no awareness that we do, until "The Physics of Love" spurred an awakening.

Physics has existed since the beginning of time and it affects everything. But let's start at the beginning. No, wait - The Beginning! Playwright and performer Jennifer Joy Pawlitschek takes us back, in many ways, via Lisa, the heroine of "The Physics of Love". First, via integrated multi-media presentation, we go back to a time before dinosaurs, videotapes and traffic-even before the Big Bang! Lisa is a 7th grade science teacher and we accompany her through her classes and a series of First Dates through the filter of matter/anti-matter. Does it matter? Yes!

We are there with Lisa as she dates various denizens of metro-Lesburban. We see that she's really, really trying to find someone. She doesn't have a "type", unless "breathing" is a "type", and each potential partner shows early on why she won't cut the mustard with our heroine. Lisa isn't too picky, but you'll need to see the show to see why.
Next we meet, and participate, as Lisa's class of 7th grade science students. Be prepared to remember and name the planets...plus, your junior high self will recall the confusion of being a tween and early teen and the feeling of "liking" someone for the very first time. It's magic!
Juxtaposed with the first crush of one tween on another-or "how does a person who likes a person tell a person"-is the crush of a toe, then the crush on a dance partner, as Lisa's tribulations in meeting a suitable New York City proto-lesbo-sorta-dykey-something-on-the-ball woman seem to come to an end. Or do they?

Lisa meets Chris, the One, at a ballroom dance class for lesbians. Chris is the Perfect Female Type: butchy with an appreciation for femme-y. Chris aims to please and hits the mark dead-on. Lisa's lovemaking scene is one of the best that I've seen in which everyone keeps her clothing on. The rich traditions of oral interpretation-prose, people, poetry-vocally make fluid the movements, sounds, nuances and satisfaction of lovemaking, as well as the limerance of the morning after. The performance is luminous.

Then comes the First Fight, a relationship version of the Big Bang. We know from our Physics training that for sound to occur there must be something to make the sound, a medium through which it travels and something to receive the sound. The First Fight is two for three-Chris receives nothing, or so it seems. Lisa's revelations after the Fight begin the phoenix cycle of smoldering, combustion, immolation and ultimately the reinvention and rebirth of an even better relationship. This takes this one-woman show beyond the ordinary.

There is a striking use of slides, drawings, background and light on the screen behind the live performance, the reason for its existence. Once the performance began, I was no longer aware of the flickering tea light on my table or of the others around me. Pawlitschek integrates the particular aspects of physics, the interpretation, the operation of the laws of nature on psyches and personalities as seamlessly as one line of poetry leads into the next. Lights and sound, by Joe Pier, experienced a couple of glitches, but did not distract. Multi-media, by Ahmed Tigani, was seamless. Direction was by Jonathan Warman.

Doric Wilson's original TOSOS, The Other Side Of Silence, was the progenitor of Off-Off-Broadway in the early 60s through the 70s. TOSOS was dedicated to writing and performing the reality plays and passions of our lives. Doric Wilson, Mark Finley and Barry Childs formed TOSOS II, its successor, in 2000. Since then, they have been devoted to ensuring the voices of our LGBTI community are heard. "The Physics of Love" is the first offering of the Ethyl Eichelberger Solo Show Project this year. At the helm of the Solo Show project is Jamie Heinlein, who worked for over a year with Pawlitschek to get the show produced.

Support live theatre! Support TOSOS II and support artists like Jennifer Joy Pawlitschek. They tell the stories of our lives.
