Several things were different about the August 24 edition, the season's penultimate, of Broadway at the Beach, hosted by exceptional singer Brandon Cutrell and pianist Ray Fellman at the Ice Palace. For the first time in recent memory, there were no lip-synch performers-in-residence and no theater trivia contest and the number of locals and visitors who stepped up to the open microphone exceeded the number of scheduled special guests, all elements which made for some exceptional live music-making.
Brandon and Ray's special guests were Sean Palmer, Broadway's original Prince Eric in "The Little Mermaid;" Taylor Frey, member of the Broadway company of "Finian's Rainbow" and understudy for Cheyenne Jackson in the role of Woody Mahoney; Stonewall Sensation Mark Montague, who offered a graceful "Bring Him Home," from "Les Misérables;" Miss Stonewall 2009 Chocolatina, reveling in "I Enjoy Being a Girl," from "Flower Drum Song;" and Eric Michael Krop, with a song from "Altar Boyz." "One Hand in My Pocket" and "I'm 15 for a Moment" were Brandon's own selections.
With "Finian's Rainbow" in the air, writer and singer Michael Portantiere gave us his welcome take on "Old Devil Moon." Songs from "Ragtime" were fielded, thanks to "Finian's Rainbow" cast member Joe Aaron Reid's proud, solid "Make Them Hear You" and Sam and Jason's "Wheels of a Dream." Ken Woodhouse sang a hard-hitting "West End Avenue" from "The Magic Show." In Rosemary Palladino's "I Get a Kick out of You," she pointedly changed "Flying too high with some guy in the sky" to "with some dyke in the sky." Can "I Enjoy Being a Dyke" be far behind? Robbie Neigeborn, Brandon's significant other, remembered Judy Garland with a searing "The Man That Got Away." Brian Roland probed a number from "Children of Eden." And I reprised "What Can You Lose?"-the duet from "Dick Tracy," which I sang with John Philip in Denise Harbin's Arts Project of Cherry Grove show "Hollywood Confidential" a couple of days before-this time in its solo version.
Anticipate visits from Lavinia Draper (Susan Campanaro) and Kenny Holcomb for the season finale of Broadway at the Beach on August 31.
