Devin Richards (“Finian’s Rainbow,” Encores! “Lost in the Stars”) was the headliner for the season’s second Broadway at the Beach, at the Ice Palace on June 27, which hosts singer Brandon Cutrell and pianist Ray Fellman opened with “Halley’s Comet.”
Richards’ songs were a fantastic “Summertime,” from the Gershwins and DuBose Heyward’s opera “Porgy and Bess;” Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me;” Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s “Old Man River,” from “Show Boat,” with Richards awarded mid-song applause for a sonorous low note; and a call-and-response “Minnie the Moocher,” which put the audience to work. Richards is slated to return to Broadway at the Beach on August 1.
Elijah Miles, Stonewall Sensation Sarah Cummings, Marie’s Crisis’ Kenny Green, with pianist John Bronson, and Ariel Sinclair (“My vagina is eight miles wide”) were the other featured guests. Bob “Rose” Levine and Chuck Prentice, from the open mic list, sang Irving Berlin songs and the writer offered Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s “Somewhere.”
Broadway at the Beach takes the Fourth of July off and resumes on July 11.
