“Polka the Elk” is Rachael Elliott’s latest release and changes the complexion of what the bassoon can do and be as a solo instrument. The first selection, “À Mon Seul Désir,” has an urban, searching feel to it. The plaintive quest of the bassoon is supported by piano, as it reaches out and strives for the answer to the question that may not have been asked aloud. There is urgency in the piano, as the bassoon explores the extremes of its range, from mezzo-soprano to baritone profundo, scaling the psyche to a final determination. Considering that the title is shared with a tapestry that contains a riddle, the determination may be a riddle as well. As with the tapestry, is this “according to my desire alone,” “love desires only beauty of the soul?” You’ll need to listen, and decide.
“Polka the Elk” is an evocative piece punctuated with vibraphone, various percussion and cymbals, and symbols. Does the bell toll for Polka? For us? The overtones clash, mingle as one can imagine the meander of a lone elk, making his or her way in the world, trying to understand what’s surrounding the experience. Followed immediately by the cycle “With Eyes Cast Down,” this is a piece of great energy that begins with a voice, no lyric, singing lightly, followed immediately by a swirling maelstrom of piano and throaty bassoon. After the storm, the calm and the tonality return. While the balm is felt, there is a thrumming restless energy underneath that foreshadows more thought, coming from minor into an almost uplifting synthesizer/string piano section. The bassoon underpins, then sings its restless wandering, and the piano duets fore and aft. This is music to be felt, spurring thoughts and feelings, colors and moods. Perfect for a rainy afternoon, or just watching the snow float down, “Polka the Elk” will take you out of yourself. Give a listen and feel disconnection, connection and perhaps something more.
