Jennifer Joy’s latest brilliant work, “The Chaos Theory of Now,” is an amazing piece of theatre that is part of the Theatre for the New City’s Dream Up Festival 2019. Hop on the “Go See It Bus” as it’s playing various times just through Sunday September 15.
If you’ve been a science-type person from long before “Big Bang Theory” brought sexy back, then this is the show for you. Jennifer Joy weaves science and story in a Flemish tapestry, in which people familiar with Chaos Theory will enjoy the connections. People who love art and are not so science-y will learn a great deal in a short time for a very personal version of the Big Bang. I sat rapt while Joy made razor sharp connections, some of which didn’t fully click home until my companion and I were on our way home.
The best one-acts are very personal. This is a cabaret of motion where our s’hero moves among the characters of her family to show us how we are all related: the Antifa teen whose pathos for her transgender cousin is palpable and the mother of that teen who homeschools her children and is in what she feels may be a life and death struggle for her child. The quantum theory of several possible universes plays out at our feet for a truly universal experience.
Those of us who know Joy’s work from her performance of “The Physics of Love” knew what to expect. For $20 and a bit under two hours of your time, “The Chaos Theory of Now” may change your life. Visit https://thechaostheoryofnow.brownpapertickets.com and bring your friends, before it’s sold out. In fact, you may want to see it twice. This is the joy of great theatre. The Jennifer Joy.
