"Fully Committed" is the latest offering in George Street Playhouse's entirely virtual season. The eye of the hurricane in this tour de farce is Maulik Pancholy, and what a performance! Becky Mode's ragingly funny play is full of characters, and luckily so is Maulik! In a world where everybody is SO Very Very, Sam is at the bottom of the funnel with phones ringing off the hook and tempers flaring, even his world-class problem solving skills are challenged to their breaking point. This is such a fun show, and it will play your nerves like a violin, too.
Unique New York--full of upper crusty eccentrics whose names are multi-hypenate, even when their skill sets are not. Maulik is both sides of the conversation and we get several slices of New York life! Society folk, captains of industry, movie stars' assistants, and Bob, the Reservations Manager who's stuck on the LIE waiting for a tow. Hector the sous chef, Chef--who is a celebrity in his own right, Stephanie the hostess and more denizens of the Restaurant are changing so quickly that Maulik is like a whirling dervish and never once breaks character. I nearly got whiplash with the lightning speed of the conversations and to be honest, if people are not accustomed to the speed of Northeast repartee then a recording is a great way to assure you catch every word! My Jewish friends speak of "mishegoss" and Sam is Mishegoss Central. You will marvel at his skill and speed in limning Becky Mode's brilliant characterizations that are so spot-on, you'll swear the names have been changed from people you know.
David Saint, GSP's Artistic Director, is at the helm of this amazing production, and Sharon Karmazin, Executive Producer, provided the environment for rehearsal and filming that kept everyone safe and healthy. Scott Killian's original music and sound design are brilliant and Ryan Rumery's sound editing is a miracle in itself. Helen Tewksbury's Art Direction and Michael Boylan's cinematography and editing create spaces where there is precious little room. Production Manager Christopher J. Bailey and Production Stage Manager Brandon Allmon-Jackson round out the stellar crew. This is a must-see production that you can watch on your own time, any time between now and April 11, 2021. Stream it to your beautiful TV, wear your pajamas, enjoy a cocktail without an Uber and watch as Sam, an extraordinary man in execrable working conditions, keeps the tattered shreds of his dignity together where the challenges of his personal life, his work life and his aspirational life exert the kind of pressure from which Sam makes flawless diamonds. And revenge is a dish best eaten bitter cold."
"Fully Committed" is running now through April 11, and it's time for you to fully commit by visiting www.GeorgeStreetPlayhouse.org today!
