On January 31, Eventive streamed Alexandro Pacheco’s powerful new short film “Ideologies & The Promise,” its overlapping stories of immigrants, alienation, estrangement, and a family secret centering around a Mexican family and a Cuban woman one of them befriends.
At a Mexican-American church, exuberant Petra (Carolina Parra), who is avoiding a family funeral, meets the sterner Sara (Vivian Perez). They compare notes on what the Lady of Guadalupe and Che Guevara mean to them, and Petra invites Sara to a colorful fiesta upstairs, complete with a Mariachi band (Fiesta Mexicana de Nueva York). Each brightens the other’s life a bit.
In a more austere church setting, handsome Nick (Peter Grieco) and his cousin Adam (Colin Hylander) tensely await the funeral. In a dramatic revelation scene, a long-buried secret is aired and Petra, arriving after all, adds her take.
