Have you ever had a fever dream, where chased shadows on a misty shore? Did a winsome stranger join you? Would you speak with that person? And what would you say? Could your imagination run free? Could you puzzle out where you were, what comes next, will you return if given a chance?
Consider, if you will, a play that combines the candor of Tom Stoppard, the absurdism of Edward Albee, the self awareness of Noël Coward, the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre, and the mysticism of Latin America. This masterwork of Jacobo Morales shows he is a man of many parts. The English language premier of his play “Baipás” is a heaping helping of NYC cutting-edge theatre without leaving the Garden State. This is a bold play for George Street Playhouse (GSP). While GSP is known as a venue that launches many new musicals and brilliant new plays, this is a flavorful combination of rich music, lush movement, dance, and dazzling scenes that would challenge any actor. Genius direction by Julio Monge and the art of actors Maggie Bofill as Lorena and Jorge Luna as Antonio combine to make a gossamer fever dream of something I am still turning over, like a full cut gem, in my mind. The stage is spare, there are projections suggesting shadows, almost like Indonesian puppet theatre. The lighting borders on clinical at times, yet the projections illuminate the thoughts of the Lorena and Antonio as they explore a lifetime of experience, and love, in the span of a bit over 90 minutes. Wilson Chin’s scenic design vision combining with Jason Lyons’ lighting, Caite Hevner’s projections, Harry Nadal’s costumes, with flow and movement and the sound environment created by Germán Martinez, with the joy of Javier Diaz’s original score, all transport you to a quantum locale that is nowhere and everywhere. It is nothing and everything, past-present-future. And it is something you simply must see.
“Baipás” is running only through March 20, hurry! Get your tickets now for the best of theatre with no bridge or tunnel required. Visit GeorgeStreetPlayhouse.org today!
