David Harms’ play Powerhouse will have you on the edge of your seat from the beginning. In the dark intimacy of the black box theatre at A.R.T., you begin at a seminar held by high power attorney Regan Van Riper (Laura Shoop) and for the women at the seminar, she shoots from the hip with the question “Can women have it all”. The answer is within.
Ken Wolf’s expert direction and Jack C. Golden’s set take your eye and mind in many different places. Regan’s sub rosa paramour is an associate in the firm where she is a partner as well as her protégé. This is a dangerous game they play. Guy Stone (Dominick LaRuffa Jr) is a younger man who is in love with Regan, the woman. Regan the Powerhouse is just another facet of who she is. When Guy is called in to Human Resources, <InsertScaryMusicHere> Regan crosses sword with the managing partner Norris Peebles (Jeorge Bennett Watson) and the game is well and truly afoot.
This play challenges decades of old-boy-network and code-switching rule-bending power plays in the span of a mere 90 minutes. I took a deep breath after the final moments, and as I walked down to the street into the light of a gorgeous Autumn day, I got excited for the day when life mirrors Art.
Currently, Powerhouse is running through October 30, get tickets here NOW: PowerHousePlay.com.
