George Street Playhouse presents a moving event that is every bit as big as the invention of moveable type. Johannes Gutenberg’s Bible was a big deal and so is Steve Guttenberg’s “Tales from the Guttenberg Bible” now at George Street Playhouse. Guttenberg’s story begins in the last millennium when very different things were possible for a 17 year old who had just graduated high school in Massapequa, Long Island. His parents had a friend who was in the Business, who agreed to host young Steve for two of the most life-changing weeks of his life. When he gets on the plane to California, we go with him and this 90-minute ride reminds you what it is like to be human. We were all once young, full of pepper and dreams and a dash of chutzpah and Steve guides us through the victories and setbacks of a lifetime filled with love.
There are three versatile players who join Guttenberg on this hero’s quest, Actor 1 – Carine Montbertrand, Actor 2 – Arnie Burton and Actor 3 – Dan Domingues, each of whom plays their own cast of characters from Guttenberg’s life. It is a quick turnaround throughout for each of the actors, like “The 39 Steps”, but more like 20,000 steps.
I went in expecting a cabaret of a play, a memoir, and what I got was a waterfall of wonderful! From the clips of the many films Steve has done through the music that brought back my tween and teen years during the pre-curtain time, through the gems in Steve’s stories – YES! You will feel like he’s a treasured friend, and take a hankie as when the show draws to a close you may find a wee leak happening.
