Sara Farrington’s “A Trojan Woman” is in it’s national premier now at Luna Stage. This is the show you’ve been waiting to see! Masterfully directed by Meghan Finn, and starring Drita Kabashi, this dynamic duo originated the work that debuted at the Interbalkan Festival of Ancient Drama in 2023. Adapted from Euripedes’ The Trojan Women, Farrington has made the Irina character every woman, and some men, in this adaptation of what may be the earliest anti-war play on record.
Ms. Kabashi begins our odyssey as Irina, a woman of every country who is fleeing something awful with her young child. Brightly colored puffer-style coats delineate the young “boy” in bright blue from his mother in bright pink. These colors are a stark contrast to the detritus of destruction from which Irina endows various objects to create her fever dream/concussion nightmare characters. Ms. Kabashi is providing a master class for actors as she moves with adroit grace among the ruins of civilization to give us the cluelessness of the gods and monsters that control our world. Tropes of classic Greek theater are interspersed with 21st century items, all of which illuminate the struggle and sorrow are timeless. The question for me from seeing this work is do struggle and sorrow need to be ceaseless as well.
Your heart will stop and start again when “A Trojan Woman” holds it. The show is running only until March 24, 2024 with special added performances March 28-31 and when it’s gone, it’s GONE. Get your tickets now at https://ci.ovationtix.com/35227/production/1179013.
